Dir: Teona Strugar Mitevska | Cast: Noomi Rapace, Sylvia Hoeks, Nikola Ristanovski | Drama | 105’ 2025
Noomi Rapace stars in this inspired drama that follows a week in the life of Mother Teresa of Calcutta where she decides to set up her own Order.
It’s 1948 and Mother Teresa is anxiously awaiting permission to set up her own mission. Moving amongst the sick and dying she fails to save a mother from losing her unborn child. But she feels her work at the Loreto Entally convent has come to an end.
Counting back through the seven days this elegant and classically styled biopic emphasises the serious commitment the devout Catholic Mother Superior gave to caring for the local community but also explores her personal relationships with her colleagues. and in particular her fellow nun Sister Agnieska who also wants a change of direction but for an entirely different reason. And in this regard Teresa emerges as somewhat of a martinet. She states clearly ‘she would never jeopardy her mission for earthly pleasures’ and here Mother ponders the moral, ethical and spiritual concerns of Catholicism when her colleague Sister Agnieska announces her pregnancy. And this brings the two women into conflict

Once again she excels with a thought-provoking and imaginatively filmed reflection on religious commitment and the complex issues involved in interpreting the true meaning of Christianity. @MeredithTaylor
