Woman Unknown is a gripping, beautifully controlled drama about a woman trapped by a past that refuses to stay buried. Set in Denmark just after the Second World War, it takes the familiar story of collaboration and gives it a sharp, female perspective.
Marie, played superbly by Mathilde Arcel, is a young nanny working for a wealthy widower. Marriage seems to offer her an escape from domestic service and a respectable new life. But Marie has a secret connected to the German occupation — and in a country determined to cleanse itself of its wartime shame, she becomes an easy target.
What makes the film so compelling is the way el-Toukhy lets the pressure build. Nothing is quite what it seems. Polite rooms become threatening spaces, smiles conceal suspicion and Marie is increasingly boxed in by people who believe they already know her story.
Visually, it’s cool, elegant and often quietly unsettling. The camera stays close to Marie, watching every flicker of fear, desire and defiance. Beautiful interiors and immaculate period detail contrast with the ugliness underneath. There’s a sensuality to the images, too, but it never feels decorative — the beauty itself becomes part of the trap.
Arcel won the Best Actress prize. She gives Marie a wonderfully restrained performance, saying as much with a look as with dialogue. She never plays her simply as a victim. Marie is intelligent, watchful and increasingly determined to keep something of herself for herself.
That combination — strong storytelling, terrific acting and a confident visual style — helps explain why Venice gave this Danish drama the main award. This isn’t just a worthy historical drama or a film with an important message. It’s proper cinema: tense, atmospheric and emotionally involving.
The Golden Lion prize is really well deserved. El-Toukhy has taken a story rooted in post-war Denmark and made it feel surprisingly real and immediate, asking a question that still resonates: who gets to decide who a woman really is?.
