Dir: Alfred Hitchcock | Richard Todd, Marlene Dietrich, Jane Wyman, Michael Wilding | Thriller
Not the most familiar Hitchcock, even for those who think they know a bit about him. Detailed discussion of the central plot point that caused such consternation among the critics being likely to bring the Spoiler police upon my head, I’ll confine myself to these few points:
It was the first of three films in which Hitchcock’s daughter Patricia featured in a supporting role.
It was the only Hitchcock ever to feature Marlene Dietrich, who gets to sing ‘I’m the laziest gal in town.
And it bristles with local colour in the form of supporting roles that includes Alistair Sim, Alfie Bass, and with an amusing cameo by Joyce Grenfell, billed in the credits simply as ‘Luverly Ducks’. The film won a Mention at the Locarno Film Festival 1950. @RichardChatten
