Dir/Wri: Eva Victor | Cast: Eva Victor US Drama
Normally the dog dies in indie features but here it’s a mouse that is senselessly bludgeoned to death in this ‘Mumblecore’ style feminist feature written and directed by Eva Victor who also stars as the main character Agnes, 28, a droll and introspective professor living alone in a spacious wooden clad house In Massachusetts
When longtime friend Lydie comes to stay revealing her pregnancy the two seem more interested in each other emotionally – and almost sexually – with a strong feminist viewpoint about their awkward often amusing experiences with men.
There are some inspired scenes such as the sequence when Agnes visits her college mentor Preston Decker where the goings on are left to our imagination, an explanation following later in which it transpires Agnes has been raped by the end of the evening.
Agnes decides not to prosecute – Preston has a kid – but what follows presents astute often darkly humorous observations as Agnes’ life perks up and becomes more meaningful when she gets her ideal job and finds love with her next door neighbour proving you just have to meet the right person and find your groove.
A confident and watchable feature despite the facile often simplistic dialogue. Sorry, Baby nonetheless garnered a writing prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. @MeredithTaylor
