Sexy Beast: A Sun-Drenched Slice of Pure Evil
Jonathan Glazer’s Sexy Beast is one hell of a cult classic: a sun-baked fever dream where retirement looks like paradise, friendship comes with a body count, and Ben Kingsley gives the word unhinged an entirely new postcode.
Ray Winstone’s Gal Dove is living the dream in a Spanish villa, all bronzed flesh, swimming pools and domestic bliss with his beloved DeeDee (Amanda Redman). There’s genuine tenderness beneath the macho swagger, a lovely, lived-in intimacy that makes Gal’s determination to leave his criminal past behind feel surprisingly moving. Who wouldn’t want to swap London’s underworld for Mediterranean sunshine and a little marital nookie?
Enter Don Logan, played by Kingsley in a performance of such ferocious, foul-mouthed comic brilliance that you almost want to applaud every time he opens his mouth — preferably from a safe distance. A human hand grenade in a cheap suit, Logan is part pantomime villain, part psychotic bully, and wholly unforgettable. His verbal assaults concerning his ‘front bottom’ are grotesquely funny, his temper terrifyingly unpredictable, and his refusal to take no for an answer turns a criminal proposition into a full-blown nightmare. Forget Gandhi: this is Kingsley at his most gloriously, gloriously nasty.
What follows is a deliciously mean thriller, where menace lurks beneath the laughter and every apparent escape route leads to another moral dead end. Glazer’s direction is a visual knockout, too: blazing Mediterranean colours, surreal imagery, hypnotic compositions and a wonderfully oppressive sense that paradise can turn poisonous in an instant. The opening sequence alone, with its languid sunshine and that enormous boulder thundering down the hillside, announces a filmmaker with a wicked eye and a taste for the absurd.
The film’s real trick is its balancing act: black comedy, gangster movie, psychological horror and an unexpectedly affecting love story, all simmering in the same cinematic pressure cooker. Winstone supplies the bruised humanity; Kingsley detonates the whole damn thing.
Twenty-five years on, Sexy Beast remains a gloriously twisted little masterpiece: funny, frightening, visually ravishing and proof that the most dangerous beast in the room may well be the one who won’t shut up.
