Dir: Amélie Bonnin | France, Drama 2025
To open this year’s Cannes Festival on an upbeat note Amélie Bonnin returns with Partir un Jour, an adaptation of her award-winning short film.
Encouraging to see the return of the musical romcom after last year’s Emilia Perez, and the lovely Annette, but the songs here leave a lot to be desired and the script is threadbare considering the runtime which seems to drag on despite some razzle dazzle. But that’s often the trap when directors try to extend a successful short.
Bonnin nevertheless serves up a happy go lucky blend of nostalgia, love, and self-discovery. Juliette Armanet plays Cécile, a woman ready to realise her dream of opening a restaurant, when a family event derails her best laid plans and sends her careering back into her past.
Starring Bastien Bouillon and François Rollin, Partir Un Jour is a decent and relatable crowd pleaser with appeal across the generations with its exploration of personal trials and tribulations anchored in an often moving storyline. @MeredithTaylor
