Dir: Marlon Brando | Cast: Marlon Brando, Pina Pellicer, Karl Malden | US Western 141’
One Eyed Jacks was one of the tiny minority of westerns which uses the California coastline as a backdrop. It would have been a truly extraordinary film had it been completed by the original director. But with two Napoleons like Brando and Kubrick it would never have seen the light of day; although Charles Lang’s photography would have been a shoe-in for an Academy Award had the film not had the misfortune to be up against ‘West Side Story’.
Brando’s megalomania is immediately apparent from the thing’s inordinate length. But I for one would have happily sat through a film twice as long. @RichardChatten
