Ed Wood went to his grave a complete unknown. But he would have enjoyed his posthumous fame, and he would have loved being the subject of an Oscar-winning tribute in nostalgic black & white by avid fan Tim Burton; even though it does perpetuate the rather back-handed complement that he had distinguished himself as positively the worst director of all time. Which he wasn’t of course.
In this telling Wood’s films look much better than they actually were in the excerpts shown in Burton’s film, and it plays fast and loose with historical reality by depicting a personal meeting between Wood and Orson Welles and ‘Plan Nine’ receiving a lavish Hollywood premiere. @RichardChatten
