Tony Richardson confirmed his position at the vanguard of the British new wave with this touching adaptation of Shelagh Delaney’s play that tells the story of a pregnant left to fend for herself after her mother remarries.
Rita Tushingham’s enormous eyes inevitably remain the most memorable feature – despite stiff competition from Robert Stephen’s’ glass eye – Dora Bryan has the role of her career and Walter Lassally’s photography is as usual exemplary.
