Gianni Amelio’s Painless follows Davide, a thirty-something second-hand bookseller in Rome, living a small, self-contained life among other people’s books. His routine is upended when the past suddenly catches up with him, forcing him out of the safe, narrow world he has built for himself. Everything changes when a silent North African boy is suddenly placed in his care. After an accident leaves the child fighting for his life, Davide’s unease deepens into guilt and responsibility. At the hospital he encounters Aminah, a frightened, pregnant teenager who has arrived from Algeria by migrant boat. Unable to abandon her, he takes her home. Soon others begin appearing at his door, and his apartment becomes an improvised refuge for people with nowhere else to go.
Amelio avoids making Davide a conventional hero. His compassion is mixed with confusion, guilt and an inability to say no. That ambiguity gives the film its emotional force. As his home fills with strangers, private generosity collides with public hostility, culminating in his arrest for helping undocumented migrants.
Borghi gives a restrained, increasingly haunted performance, while Ramazzotti provides warmth and humanity as Elsa. Amelio’s direction is similarly understated, resisting the temptation to turn migration into a purely political argument. Instead, he concentrates on faces, gestures and the awkward intimacy of people suddenly forced to share a life.
There are moments when the accumulation of suffering threatens to become overly schematic, but Painless is strongest when it remains personal. The bookseller who deals in other people’s stories becomes, almost accidentally, the keeper of lives society would rather leave unseen.
Timely without feeling opportunistic, Painless asks a deceptively simple question: what happens when another person’s desperation arrives at your door — and compassion becomes an offence? It is a sombre, humane film about the uneasy distance between what is legal and what is right.
