One of only two films I’ve ever watched on video that impressed me sufficiently for me to immediately rewind and watch it again right through from the start.

Directed by Netherlands born Paul Cox and adapted for the screen by co-writer Norman Kaye (best known for Bad Boy Bubby) the pace is deceptively languid while Isabelle Huppert is her usual fascinatingly inscrutable self as a vacationing Frenchwoman travelling through Australia when her eyesight is seriously damaged in a car crash.

The theme of blindness is of course made doubly poignant by the sheer visual beauty of the verdant landscape in which the events unfold.
