This feel-good kitchen feature is a far cry from the realist sink dramas popular in the latter half of the 20th century. In fact it belongs to a new sub genre of films set in in the fast-moving world of commercial kitchens tv. This one weaves the now ubiquitous migrant theme into the narrative, starring Audrey Lamy and François Cluzet The Kitchen Brigade is directed by Louis-Julien Petit
It sees disgruntled sous-chef Cathy Marie (Lamy) so cheesed off with her job at a high-end gourmet restaurant she opts to pursue a dream of becoming a head chef at her own restaurant.
But when her plans don’t quite work out, and she finds herself in financial meltdown, Cathy Marie turns her talents to running the cafeteria at the local migrant shelter run by Lorenzo (Cluzet) and Sabine (Chantal Neuwirth).
There’s not much to enjoy about being in charge of a run-down kitchen where her clients are hungry young men, and it’s a far cry from the glamorous world of high end restaurants but gradually she turns the corner and finds value on this new role, satisfying herself and her famished new customer base into the bargain.
Upbeat and fun to watch with a few laughs thrown in for good measure The Kitchen Brigade provides just the right feel-good fare for the chilly autumn nights ahead. @MeredithTaylor
