Dir: Jack King | UK 2024 91’
With evocative monochrome images Jack King adds artistic mystique to his minimalist story of migrants stranded in a moral crisis in the Yorkshire Dales.
Romanian car-wash manager Cristi has fetched up in the middle of the craggy terrain to bury a co-worker who has mysteriously appeared on his site in urban Bradford. Fully aware that the circumstances will give rise to serious consequences for the business and its illegal staff and risk his own precarious existence far away from home, the only solution is to quietly dispose of the body with the help Yusuf, a surly Kurdish colleague who insists on performing Muslim burial rites.
Time is not on their side and a fierce argument ensues over religious differences and personal misconceptions. In the freezing weather they retreat to a pub for hot drinks but a frosty reception from the ‘Yorkshire born and bred’ locals further alienating and the two and forcing them deeper into despair and conflict. This slim but artful first feature for English director Jason King pictures the modern migrant experience at its most salient, profound and affecting. @MeredithTaylor
