That old devil called love and Catholic guilt is at the heart of this gentle Irish romantic comedy that stars Pierce Brosnan and Helena Bonham Carter based on Niall Williams’ best selling novel.
Two young lives are shattered by their families. Nicholas (O’Shea) suffers loss when his father (Brosnan) has a religious epiphany and leaves a comfortable job in the Civil Service to become a painter reducing his wife and son to poverty. Over the sea in the Western Isles Isobel (Skelly) sees her artistic existence ruined after her brother has an accident and she is sent to a convent by parents (Bonham Carter and Byrne). Paths will eventually cross otherwise there wouldn’t be a love story in this classically told lyrical film that captures the stunning Northern Irish coastline shot by Damien Elliott of Game of Thrones fame.
