Dir: William Castle | Cast: Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Richard Long | US Horrot 75’

Presumably the resemblance of key elements in ‘House on Haunted Hill’ to later scenes in ‘The Haunting’ and ‘Le Boucher’ were purely fortuitous.

Set in one of those big houses that no wealthy eccentric should be without, as you might expect the film’s biggest single asset is everybody’s favourite wicked uncle Vincent Price; although everybody’s favourite loser Elisha Cook runs him a close second.

In recent years the film has acquired posthumous fame due to the backhanded compliment of a catchpenny remake. But what the original lacked in production values it definitely made up for in period charm. RichardChatten
